From finding a  Handicapped Stateroom, deciding if they are adequate, whether or not furniture might have to be moved around or even completely removed by a Stateroom Attendant. And for those who were placed in a Handicapped Stateroom via a GUARANTEE booking, whether or not the room will cause any differences to you that matters (for example the lack of a couch might be an issue to some when it comes to eating. It's little things such as these which will make your cruise so much better:-) We are also including what we feel is important information for the handicapped cruiser and those cruising with them. On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Prinsendam, Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not like to use the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines that require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...) [ On the rest of the HAL fleet (and note the above says NIEUW AMSTERDAM... NOT  Amsterdam ) If it has a verandah, it has a cooler!  [ IRL_Joanie's Note: The standard Verandah/Balcony is 6 ft. deep by 9 ft. wide. VA aft/stern Verandah/Balconys are deeper (how much depends on which deck, and Vista class (Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam & Zuiderdam) versus Signature class (Eurodam & Nieuw Amsterdam). VD are 7.5 ft. deep. VF and VE on Vista Class ships, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam, Verandah deck are only 4.5 ft. deep. [ VA 4174, VA 4176, VA 4179 & VA 4181 Deluxe Verandah Ocean View Staterooms.  These VA AFT Staterooms are about 3 ft. longer than the other 2 Aft facing cabins (VB 4178 & VB 4183.) They are also about 6 inches wider. Does not sound like much but does help with the congestion around the end of the bed. Verandah/Balcony size is about 10 ft. X 10 ft., with a lounge chair, two deck chairs, a very small table and ottoman/footstool. The Deck 4 Aft VA's are all about 3 ft. longer inside than the side VA's, and the verandah/balconys are about 4 ft. deeper than the side VA's.  [ These sizes are most likely the same on all 4 Vista Class ships, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam & Zuiderdam, though there may be slight differences in the sizes. [ As of this time I do not have information on the Verandah/Balcony sizes of the PS or SY categories Staterooms. [ SA, SB & SC Stateroom Sizes NOT INCLUDING Verandah/Balcony: [ These sizes are most likely the same on all 4 Vista Class ships, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam & Zuiderdam, though there may be slight differences in the sizes. [ The stern Verandah/Balconys on the Noordam are different from the other three Vistas. Deck 4 verandah/balconys are larger and more exposed, and the Deck 5 ones are completely covered. The Oosterdam and Westerdam are like this. The Noordam stern is evenly sloped, so that Deck 4 is not larger nor is Deck 5 covered any more than Deck  4, Deck 6, or Deck 7. Deck 8 has a lot of coverage on all four ships, but probably a little more so on the Noordam. [ These sizes are NOT INCLUDING the Verandah/Balconys, just the Interior of the staterooms themselves. Deck 7 Layout [

The cabinet in the dining room was filled with Waterford crystal (pattern: Lismore).  My travel agent held a dinner party one night for about  8 guests, and the Pinnacle Grill manager agreed to cater it (which they don't normally do).

It was a wonderful week on the lovely Zuiderdam!

Some corrections on the stateroom pages for the Zuiderdam.  It says that there is a sofa bed.  The bed is a queen sized Murphy bed and very comfortable.  It folds out from the wall below the TV in the living room.  In one of the attached pictures you can see the doors in the wall below the TV where it is stored.

This cruise was a family cruise that I booked for my mother and I, Aunts and Uncles, and cousins.  We had a sail away party for which the ship provided appetizers, bar service and servers as you can see in one of the pictures.  In addition to our family we also had some fellow CC members join us for the sail away party.  So about 20 people in all attended.  The ship made no mention to us that they don't usually do this, actually their attitude was just the opposite; they were well prepared to do it and provided us with numerous options.

The hot tub on the balcony is way too small for anyone except children and very small people.

My wife and I shared Zuiderdam's Portside Penthouse #7046 with my parents on the 9/11/10 Alaskan Inside Passage sailing.  It was a great sailing in a great stateroom.  I had been worried about its condition as it is the oldest of the Vista class ships.  We were pleased with what we found.  I've included a couple photos of areas of the penthouse that are showing wear.  These few items did not detract from our enjoyment of the cruise!  I'd definetly do the Zuiderdam again.  Photos September 2010

The balcony of the Penthouse suite on Holland America Line's Zuiderdam is not just a balcony - it is your own private outdoor dining room, living room, nature-watching observation deck and pool deck (well, jacuzzi deck) all-in-one.  We had the good fortune of sailing Alaska's Inside Passage in the Zuiderdam Penthouse Verandah Suite #7046, and the balcony served as all of these things for us, as well as being a comfortable gathering place for our family reunion cruise.

This suite is one of two penthouses on the Zuiderdam, and is located on the port side. For our cruise to Alaska, this turned out to be the perfect choice, as it seemed that the port side spent more time turned towards the main sights, such as the Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay, than starboard. Other members of  our group had starboard cabins, so we could easily switch sides to follow interesting views - however, we still seemed to spend most of our time on the portside penthouse balcony. Of course, this may have something to do with its enormous space, comfortable furnishings and convenient layout. According to Holland America Line's website, the penthouse suite on the Zuiderdam measures 1, 150 sq. ft., including the balcony. We didn't measure the suite nor the balcony, but a consensus group guess put the area of the verandah about one-third of the total size, or approximately 400 sq. ft. Our party of ten could easily stand outside and not feel crowded. In fact, there was probably space for at least ten more.

Our group used the dining area on the balcony mostly for afternoon snack time. On the first day at sea, while cruising the inside passage, we had high tea delivered to the cabin and enjoyed our treats while looking for wildlife in the water and on shore.

Our room stewards, Rudy and Wayan, were top-notch, and seemed to have an uncanny ability to sense the minute we left our cabin so they could rush in and have it spic-and-span before we got back from breakfast or dinner. They were easily tracked down for special requests, and answered every question with a smile. The nightly towel animal left on the bed was a treat the children looked forward to each day, as well as the chocolates that accompanied it! Photos July 2011
