We hope that this information being in one place can help those that need the information for having a wonderful cruise on board a Holland America Line ship. From finding a  Handicapped Stateroom, deciding if they are adequate, whether or not furniture might have to be moved around or even completely removed by a Stateroom Attendant. And for those who were placed in a Handicapped Stateroom via a GUARANTEE booking, whether or not the room will cause any differences to you that matters (for example the lack of a couch might be an issue to some when it comes to eating. It's little things such as these which will make your cruise so much better:-)

We are also including what we feel is important information for the handicapped cruiser and those cruising with them. (See Handicapped Information link at the bottom of this page)

This is a combined work by Cruise Critic Members!! It was originally suggested by Cruise Critic Member: ariawoman

On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Prinsendam, Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not like to use the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines that require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...)
[
On the rest of the HAL fleet (and note the above says NIEUW AMSTERDAM... NOT  Amsterdam ) If it has a verandah, it has a cooler!
[
IRL_Joanie's Note: The standard Verandah/Balcony is 6 ft. deep by 9 ft. wide. VA aft/stern Verandah/Balconys are deeper (how much depends on which deck, and Vista class (Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam & Zuiderdam) versus Signature class (Eurodam & Nieuw Amsterdam). VD are 7.5 ft. deep. VF and VE on Vista Class ships, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam, Verandah deck are only 4.5 ft. deep.
[
VA 4174, VA 4176, VA 4179 & VA 4181 Deluxe Verandah Ocean View Staterooms.  These VA AFT Staterooms are about 3 ft. longer than the other 2 Aft facing cabins (VB 4178 & VB 4183.) They are also about 6 inches wider. Does not sound like much but does help with the congestion around the end of the bed. Verandah/Balcony size is about 10 ft. X 10 ft., with a lounge chair, two deck chairs, a very small table and ottoman/footstool. The Deck 4 Aft VA's are all about 3 ft. longer inside than the side VA's, and the verandah/balconys are about 4 ft. deeper than the side VA's.
[
These sizes are most likely the same on all 4 Vista Class ships, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam & Zuiderdam, though there may be slight differences in the sizes.
[
As of this time I do not have information on the Verandah/Balcony sizes of the PS or SY categories Staterooms.
[
SA, SB & SC Stateroom Sizes NOT INCLUDING Verandah/Balcony:
[
These sizes are most likely the same on all 4 Vista Class ships, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam & Zuiderdam, though there may be slight differences in the sizes.
[
The stern Verandah/Balconys on the Noordam are different from the other three Vistas. Deck 4 verandah/balconys are larger and more exposed, and the Deck 5 ones are completely covered. The Oosterdam and Westerdam are like this. The Noordam stern is evenly sloped, so that Deck 4 is not larger nor is Deck 5 covered any more than Deck  4, Deck 6, or Deck 7. Deck 8 has a lot of coverage on all four ships, but probably a little more so on the Noordam.
[
These sizes are NOT INCLUDING the Verandah/Balconys, just the Interior of the staterooms themselves.

If you want to get the best possible wifi signal in your cabin on the Oosterdam, book one near the locations of the hallway antennas that I have listed below. I would bet that they are in similar locations on the other three Vista ships as well.

Beware Main Level Cabins on Oosterdam: I just wanted to let everyone know to be careful when booking a cabin on the Main Level on the Oosterdam. We just got off the ship and had some noise issues with our cabin and others were expressing the same concerns. We booked room 1058 & 1064 so you can get an idea of the location.

The first issue was with the noise from the Queens Lounge. Prior to the refurb many of the dances would be held in the Crows Nest. With the Crows Nest becoming part of the Explorations Lounge the dancing has moved to the Queen's Lounge. The bands that were playing used a bass guitar that vibrated the beams above many of the rooms. This caused loud vibration sounds from 7 until around 11pm. The problem is that they can no longer have bands playing in the Crows nest away from everyone because they now have a library attached to it. This essentially renders the Crows nest unusable except as an extension of the library for reading. There are no other areas to handle bands so the Queen's Lounge is the only other place to do this. I think the only solution is to cancel the bands and dancing, but I don't think that is feasible.

The second issue was with what we think was a broken service elevator. A few times during the cruise there would be a very loud screeching noise and vibrating of the cabin. This happened at 5am the first night of the cruise, another time during the middle of the night on the 2nd or 3rd night, and twice at 11pm on the last night of the cruise. The last time this happened the front desk finally told the stewards to stop using that elevator.

The front desk was very apologetic for these issues and did everything they could to resolve them. Hopefully the elevator will be fixed soon to clear up the second issue. For the first issue, they are still working with the entertainment department to see what they can do, but it is an ongoing experiment.

I would still cruise HAL, but I would think twice about doing a cabin that is on the Main Level. Hopefully these issues will be resolved shortly. These cabins are really at a good location and are close to everything, they just have a noise issue.

Before we had the beds reoriented in cabin 4051, my husband's wheelchair not only scraped along the wall, but grabbed the covers on the bed and dragged them along with him, after reorienting the beds (having the feet face the balcony rather than the wall) it added 8 additional inches worth of space between the bed and the wall. After reading and hearing so many good things about HAL DW and I were excited about our Christmas cruise on the Oosterdam which coincidently was to be our first cruise with HAL. Now maybe someone should not judge a cruiseline on the basis of a Christmas cruise but when one pays a premium for a holiday cruise, well why not. I have tried to be objective about the cruise and the ship but frankly the ship, crew and HAL did not live up to our expectations which I think were realistic expectations. While never is a long time, I doubt that we will be back aboard a HAL ship anytime soon. I think we could be regarded as seasoned cruisers and back when the world was flat I even worked aboard a cruise ship but really HAL you didn't live up to your reputation on this one. We have been on some cruises and ships that we have liked better than others but frankly overall this was the poorest cruise and ship that we have been on. Photos December 2011

Here are pictures I took of the Oosterdam's Cabin SY5001/handicapped.

This was our twelfth HAL cruise and absolutely our favorite cabin. Partly, of course, because we've never had one this large. I can just imagine a deluxe suite. Loved the location also. First cabin starboard (would have preferred port since we were sailing south) and having the window facing forward was a treat.

We had a great cruise. All of our handicap questions were answered. The bad weather encountered didn't put a damper on anything. We've been in worse.

(IRL_Joanie's Notes: The followimg was also sent for my info as I fly with portable Oxygen. I think this info will help others who also fly using portable O2: "I know you expressed concern about flying anymore. I don't know how much oxygen you are using. Dacey has been on 2 1/2 and I've put him on three now. Our home elevation in Prescott is very similar to yours in Albuquerque. We set the concentrator on 4 after boarding the plane and kept the oximeter handy during the flight. The only time he experienced any low reading was when he went to the bathroom w/o the oxygen (silly man). As long as he was quiet 4 did the job. We took our Respironics Ever-Go on the plane - smaller, lighter, and easier to handle than the Sequal. The good thing about the Ever-Go is the battery size. Much, much smaller than the Sequal. Runs on two batteries at a time - at 2 lpm together they will last 7/8 hours. Obviously we kept the setting down while on the ground. We had purchased a third battery when buying the Ever-Go, and for this trip rented a fourth. If you haven't done it, when you fly I would suggest you take an extension cord and a multi-plug power outlet cord in addition to your AC charging cords in your carry-ons. That way when you are at the airport waiting you can plug in and run on AC rather than your battery. Since so many people use the outlets for their laptops, you can usually get someone to share the outlet with the multi-plug and you have the extension cord if you aren't sitting close enough for your AC charging cords to reach. We did end up using the fourth battery a couple times. Having that extra battery gives you much more freedom with your time.

Anyway, we're home and pretty much rested by now. Raring to go again, we'll see............" Photos October 2010

This is a Handicapped Stateroom with a perfect location on the ship. Nothing blocked our views of fore (front) and aft (rear) of ship. There is no tub in this room, it has a fold down seat for the shower to sit o, and it only had 1 sink. But perfectly located for access everywhere. Views from the Verandah were so awesome! Straight shots  with no obstructions. May 2008

These rooms are virtual twins (IRL_Joanie's Note: Oosterdam and Zuiderdam SS 8068).  The photo SS-8068_LVWineaux_Zuidam1.jpg is an exterior shot showing the location of the room on deck 8.
[
These are Handicap rooms with plenty of room for a wheelchair or walker to get around.  They are also VERY similar to the photos provided by Flvirgo41 of the Eurodam SS 6084.
[
Some of the primary differences that we noticed in a Handicap room are:
- a ramp on both sides of the veranda door to allow the mobility challenged to use the balcony.
- the bathroom is more handicap accessible with a roll-in shower as well as a tub, and LOTS more grab bars.  SS HC rooms only have one sink, which is a small price to pay.
- there is a "911" button by the bed which gets a call from the operator to see what the problem is.
- there are buttons by the bed to open/close the drapes (not sure if regular SS rooms have this). Photos December 2012

I took a picture of the bathroom in 8068.  What a fiasco that was....LOL.  The first day, there was a horrendous stench in the bathroom.  We reported it.  The second day, the smell was worse...we reported it.  The third day, it was sooo bad we could hardly stand it...we reported it.  Finally, they did something about it.  Three days...Phew!  Well, on the fourth day, the toilet would not flush.  We had experienced this before on the Statendam and were told they were working on the vacuum system.  We ignored it.  About 30 minutes later, I walked into the bathroom and water was just pouring over the sides of the toilet.  We immediately called for help and found a hotel officer in the hallway who came to the rescue.  What an experience that was.  Three days of stench and then an overflowing toilet.  But, EVERYTHING else on the cruise was absolutely wonderful!
